Women's Squash Young But Strong

Gearing up for today's match against Connecticut College, the women's squash team has spent the past month hard at practice. Coming off a 7-12 overall record last year, the squash program is working on building a strong team to face the tough NESCAC comepetition this year.

Led by Co-captains K.C. Giese '01 and Vanessa Champion '01, the squad has 15 members this season. The team is looked forward to the first of 14 matchups this season against Conn College.

Right now, the team is focusing on having a solid season this winter. "We had a really strong regular season last year, but we struggled some in the postseason due to missing players," said Champion.

"We have a very young team this year with only two seniors," she added. "I think it will be a season where we'll win some good matches, but we'll probably struggle with some of the strong Division I schools. We're rebuilding so that the team will be very good in a few years. This should be a solid season, though."

Although the team has only been practicing since the season began on Nov. 1, it has already improved.

"So far the team is working really hard. It's an inexperienced team, but I feel there has already been a lot of improvement," said Cara Coscarelli '02.

The team's larger size this year, as opposed to last year's 12, has helped the team to improve.

"Practices seem to be going well with the team," said Tara Kenney '04. "It's a big team so people can do drills with players of their own ability. The team is really into it."

In collegiate squash only 10 team members compete in the one-on-one matches. Only the top nine matches are counted towards the team's overall score.

The team has high hopes for their inaugural match of the season today against Conn College.

"We have a really good chance of winning. I think we just need to pull out five strong matches and be sure that the younger players aren't nervous," Champion said.

This week's practices will be vital, culminating in today's match.

"If we work hard in practice, we'll have a real chance to win. We're all confident that we can beat this team," said Coscarelli.

Today at 7 p.m. on the Davenport squash courts, the team's hard work in practices will be put to the test.
