The Amherst men's swimming team defeated Middlebury College for the second year in a row on Saturday. The Jeffs took the meet over the Panthers by a blistering score of 156-75, capturing firsts in all the events except the 400-freestyle relay.

In addition, Amherst swimmers swept both first and second places in the 50-yard freestyle, 200-yard butterfly, 100-yard freestyle and 200-yard breaststroke.

Mike Pohorylo '04 was the only Jeff to take three wins. The Jeff rookie swam the breaststroke leg of the 400-yard medley relay that combined to take first by more than five seconds (3:43.47). Pohorylo also won both the 200-yard individual medley (2:00.95) and 200-yard breaststroke (2:15.14). In the 200-yard breaststroke race, Pohorylo was followed by teammate Dan Morash '04, who hit the wall at the 2:25.51 mark.

"My [individual medley] time was my second best un-tapered time ever," Pohorylo said. "I was pleased with my breaststroke time, but I still have a lot to learn about how to swim it."

Steve Shapiro '04, who won the first individual event of the meet-the 1,000-yard freestyle-with a time of 10:10.32, also captured the win in the other distance freestyle event, the 500-yard freestyle (4:56.47).

Read Porter '01, Chris Morton '02 and Rob Winograd '02 also captured double victories for the Jeffs on Saturday.

Porter anchored the 400-yard medley relay to ensure the victory, and also took first in the 50-yard freestyle race (22.36), followed by Pat Kennedy '03 (22.52).

Morton, who swam the butterfly leg of the 400-yard medley relay, also took first in the 200-yard butterfly race (2:03.25). Morton was followed closely by Jeff Sunderland '03, who finished in 2:03.98.

Winograd, who took the win in both the 200-yard freestyle (1:46.59) and 200-yard backstroke (2:00.69), anchored the men's 400-yard freestyle relay (3:18.63), which Middlebury touched out by merely two one-hundreths of a second.

Kennedy took the 100-yard freestyle in 49.08, just touching out Porter in 49.47.

Ben Hopkins '03 won the one-meter diving.

On Saturday Dec. 9 at 1:00 p.m., the Jeffs will travel to Springfield College to meet up with the Pride in a local rivalry and continue their winning streak. Last year, Amherst beat Springfield 138-97.
