Indoor track teams medal at Wesleyan

Last Friday at Wesleyan University, the Amherst indoor women's track team finished second overall with 92 points, while the men finished third with 65 points. Tri-captain Molly Burnett '02 took first in the 3,000-meter with a time of 10:38.13. Laurel Kilgour '03 won the 600-meter in 1:42.48. The 4 x 800 relay was collectively won by Kilgour, Alyson Venti '04, Rebecca Woo '02, and Kate Hamill '03 at the 9:57.71 mark.

In the men's events, Pat Hayes '03 won the 55-meter hurdles in 8.01. Tri-captain Jared Moshe '01 took second in the 400-meter at the 51.79 mark. John Stanton-Geddes '04 placed second in the 1500-meter with 4:10.02. "We have a really eager freshman class, and they're going to be strong," said Moshe.

Both the men's and women's track teams made it into the top five at the Brandeis Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 20. It was their first meet since their season opener on Dec. 9. The women finished second overall, posting 92 points with races in the 600 and 800-meter and the 4 x 800-meter relay. They placed just behind Brandeis University, who finished with a score of 107.

Hamill won the 600-meter with a time of 1:40.87. Kilgour led the 800 at 2:27.11. The Amherst 4 x 800 relay team had a time of 10:06.21. Venti finished second in the 1,000-meter run. Martha Nelson '03 took third place in the 1,500-meter distance and Burnett placed third in the 5,000-meter race.

The men's team also finished strong. They received fifth place overall behind Bowdoin College, Trinity College, Keene State College and Brandeis. Moshe won second place in the 400-meter run with a time of 51.60 and third place in the 200-meter run with a time of 23.63. Stanton-Geddes received runner-up in the 800-meter with a time of 2:01.19, while Hayes finished in second place in the 55-meter high hurdles with a time of 8.19. Amherst also took second place in the 4 x 400 relay. Paul Whiting '04 finished third in the triple jump.

At the Tufts University Holiday Classic on Dec. 9, no team results were recorded, but many Jeffs gave exceptional performances under head coach Erik Nedeau. Stanton-Geddes took first place in the 1,000-meter run with a time of 2:42.05. Freshman Mike Page finished second in the same race at 2:42.89. Junior Jacob Cooper finished with 2:49.56. In the 1,500-meter run, Page finished sixth with a time of 4:13.03, just ahead of Stanton-Geddes. Whiting took fifth in the triple jump and 15th in the long jump.

For the women, Hamill ended the 800-meter run in 2:26.69. Martha Nelson '03 won the 1,500-meter event at 5:02.61. In other events, junior tri-captain Amie Shei finished in eighth place in the 600-meter run, while Katie Famous '01 ended third in the 5,000-meter race. Freshmen Anne McNamara and Helen Dole each had strong starts, with McNamara placing 15th at the 1,500-meters and Dole placing 14th in the triple jump and 27th in the long jump.

Amherst's next meet will be held at Tufts University on Feb. 3.
