The general tone of the event was set in the first event, the 200y medley relay, where Amherst took the top two spots. The team of Stacie Botsford '01, Allison Martin '02, Alison Brown '02 and Sarah Malmfeldt '02 won the event, with the team of Adi Abate '04, Bea Wallace '04, Morgan Bayer '03 and Ashley Simonsen '04 finishing second.
Bayer set two new Moyer Pool records during the meet. Her first win came in the 200y fly, an event in which she already holds the Pratt Pool record. She went on to handily win the 500y freestyle in setting another pool record.
The Jeffs swept the event, with Jaime Fisher '04 finishing second and Martin finishing third.
Tiffany Johnston '01 also set a pool record in her dominating win in the 100y fly.
In the 50y freestyle, Co-captain Hillary Jones '01 won the first of two events of the day. Abate completed the double, finishing second in the event. Jones also notched a win in the 100y freestyle.
Malmfeldt also pulled out a pair of wins for Amherst as she easily won both the 100y and 200y breaststroke. Wallace finished second in the 100y breaststroke.
With two Jeff divers in Texas for an invitational event, Amherst was dominated in the diving events. Hartwick diver Erin Rowe won both events. She scored 206.25 for the 1m diving event and 193.15 in the 3m diving event, where she was the only participant.
Botsford followed her team victory in the 200y relay with an individual victory in the 200y Individual Medley. She was followed in the event by Abate.
Abate summed up the strong day Amherst had. "We knew the team was going to do well going in, but I think we were surprised how strong the individual performances were," she said.
The Hartwick meet marked the end of a strong regular season for the Jeffs as they finished with an 8-1 record. They now look to the Division III NESCAC Championships at Wesleyan University in Middletown, Conn. February 16-18.
"We're very excited," Martin said of the team's trip to the NESCAC Championships. "I think our season's been going pretty well so far," Abate added. "There have been some times this season when we were tired and may not have performed as well as we should have, but we're going into the championships pretty rested this year. I think everybody's going to swim pretty well."
Last year the women's team fared well at the championships, coming in second.
The team was led by Bayer, who in her rookie season won the 200y fly and came in second in both the 500y and 1650y free.
The women's team was also dominant in the relays, taking first place in the 400y freestyle relay and seconds in the 200y and 400y medley and 200y and 800y freestyle relays.
At nationals last year the women placed ninth, led by Bayer and Jones. Bayer took home the national title in the 200y fly and added 10th-place finishes in the 100y fly and 1650y freestyle. Jones had a third-place finish in the 100y freestyle and a fourth in the 50y free.
