NESCAC tournament preview: Basketball
By by Sports Staff
As the regular season winds down and the NESCAC tournament quickly approaches, both the men's and women's basketball teams find themselves near or at the top of their league. The winner of the NESCAC Tournament will receive an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. With only two games remaining (both teams will face Bowdoin College and Colby College) the men stand at 4-3 in the NESCAC, good enough for only fourth place, but have a respectable overall record of 15-5. That overall winning percentage of .750 is not only two losses better than tied-for-first in the league Colby (.682) but also superior to third place Williams (.727) Though Amherst is virtually guaranteed a spot in the postseason (the top seven teams receive bids and the top seed receives a first-round bye), the outcome of these last two games will determine the final standings. Colby, Amherst and Trinity all have two more league games left, so as far as the top spot, anything could happen. Williams is at a disadvantage because they have only one remaing game with a NESCAC opponent, and, head-to-head matchups will break a tie between two teams. The possibilities and permutations would make your head explode. This could get interesting. The women's side is more straightforward; they are already guaranteed a spot in the tourney. But Amherst, Bowdoin and Colby are all tied at 6-1 and vying for the number one seed. If the Jeffs beat them both, they are number one, receive the bye and save themselves a trip to Maine. If they lose, the road is just a bit longer and harder.
