This past Saturday, the Amherst men's and women's indoor track teams competed together at the Smith College Invitational. Since it was a non-scoring event, the only scores recorded were individual performances.

Among the strong individual showings in the women's team were wins in both the relays. In the 4x400, Tri-captain Amie Shei '02, Laurel Kilgour '03, Anne Perez '02 and Kate Hamill '03 combined efforts to win the race in a season best time. Similarly, in the 4x800, Alyson Venti '04, Aparna Nancherla '04, Jamie Newman '03 and Rebecca Woo '02 dominated the competition. "We usually put together really strong relay teams," said Shei. "People are motivated, and the relays are fun."

Hamill also helped the team in the 400m and 200m, taking third and fourth places, respectively. "She had great races," said Shei. "It was pretty much just a workout for her."

Tri-captain Molly Burnett '02 defeated her opponents in the 3k, and Kilgour took first in the 1k. In the 800m, Perez and Woo took third and fourth. In the 1500m, Martha Nelson '03 placed third, despite tripping and falling earlier in the race. In the same race, Tri-captain Katie Famous '01 ran her best time of the season. Helen Dole '04 took second in the 600m, also qualifying for the New Englands in the triple jump.

Like the women, the men won both relays. In the 4x400, Brian Hart '03, Janak Chandrasoma '04, Tri-captain Jared Moshe '01 and Tri-captain Robert Long '01 took first. Andrew Schneider '04, Page, Stanton-Geddes and Brett Richey '03 also won the 4 x 800 relay.

Chandrasoma, coming back from illness, won the 200m by .01 seconds. Moshe demonstrated his abilities by winning the 400m, and he was followed by Long, who took second .

Richey ran in the front for most of the 1k and Schneider placed second in the race. In other races, Max Woolf '03 and Paul Whiting '04 took second and third, respectively, in the triple jump. Alex Lenkoski '03 and Carson Taylor '03 went second and third in the 5k. John Stanton-Geddes '04 and Mike Page '04 dominated in the 1500m, coming in first and second, respectively.

The track teams next race at Tufts University for the Division III New Englands this Saturday at 10 a.m. Then they will compete at the Open New Englands, to be held at Boston University.
