Ski struggles but improves

Despite poor overall performances from the men's and women's ski teams in the last two weekends, individual performances point to possible improvement for both teams.

"Everyone is improving steadily, and next year with all the men returning, we should be a stronger team," said Seth Fitzsimmons '02.

The women's team is currently ranked eighth out of 10 in the league and the men are ranked ninth out of 10. However, individual performances at the Bromley ski resort the weekend of Feb. 3 and at the Berkshire East ski course last weekend provide encouragement.

At the Bromley meet, Meghan Nelson '01 finished sixth in the slalom with a time of 1:29.68. Following Nelson were Amy Randall '04, who finished 27th, and Kristina Parker '01, who finished 31st. Among the men the top finishers were Jay Harris '02, who finished 15th with a total time of 1:25.72, Fitzsimmons, who finished 26th, and Andrew Korytoski '04, who finished 34th.

In the giant slalom, the top finisher on the women's side was Randall, who finished 21st. Fitzsimmons was the top finisher on the men's side, at 24th place.

High winds prevented the ski team from competing in the slalom on Saturday. However, individual performances in the giant slalom, which was run on Sunday, were strong.

Nelson finished fourth in the women's giant slalom with a total time of 1:31.74, followed by Parker, who finished 29th, and Sara Edelston '03, who finished 30th. Fitzsimmons was the top Jeff on the men's side, finishing 14th with a total time of  1:29.65. He was followed by Harris, who finished 30th, and Ezra Gordon '04, who finished 45th.

With a strong showing this week, Nelson qualified for Easterns as the top single finisher not from a top four team. She is ranked fifth overall among women in the league this season. For the men, Fitzsimmons is ranked 21st overall and is followed by Harris at 29th overall.
