Russell, a freshman guard on the women's basketball team, was named the New England Women's Basketball Association (NEWBA) rookie of the week on Tuesday. This honor came a day after she was named the NESCAC women's basketball player of the week. Russell was instrumental in the Jeffs victory over Bowdoin College on Friday to claim sole first place in the NESCAC, scoring 13 points in the first half alone. When Bowdoin closed to within two points, Russell pulled a rebound of a Bowdoin miss and was fouled. She calmly stepped to the line and sunk both free throws.
•Meg Nelson '01
Nelson, who participates in both slalom and giant slalom for the ski team, proved once again this weekend that she is the class of the ski team with a balanced performance over the weekend in a meet at the Haystack ski resort in Vermont. She finished fourth in the slalom and fifth in the giant slalom. Her strong season has paid off, as she is the only Amherst skier on either the men or women's side to be invited to the ECSC Regional Championships. She was ranked fifth overall in the conference and has scored 90 points overall this season.
•Brian Daoust '01
Daoust, a tri-captain of the men's basketball team, had a great week for the Jeffs as he was pivotal in winning two important NESCAC games last week. Against Bowdoin College, Daoust had a game-high 23 points. Scoring 19 of his 23 points in the first half, he made up 70 percent of the Jeffs' first half offense. Against Colby College, Daoust scored 15 points. The win was important, because it allowed Amherst to force its way into a five-way tie for first-place in the NESCAC. Colby came into the game in first place but just couldn't handle Daoust and the Jeffs.
