The women's ice hockey team ended its 2000-2001 season on the road against Bowdoin College on Sunday in the finale of a rough three-game road trip that saw the Jeffs through Williamstown and Waterville, Maine, to finalize the Amherst record at 7-16-1. Before falling to the Polar Bears, the Jeffs added losses against Colby College on Saturday and Williams College on Wednesday.

Eph phenom Molly Wasserman scored five goals on the night, including three in the first period, to launch the Purple Cows over the Jeffs 7-0. At that time Wasserman led the ECAC with 28 goals and 19 assists. Karen Thome added a goal and an assist for host Williams, while rookie goaltender Fern Senior posted 23 saves for the game.

For the Jeffs goalie Heidi Alexander '03 tallied a valiant 44 saves despite the loss.

"We just went to the game hoping to have a good time. They're one of the best teams in the league. We really didn't go in expecting a win," said Alexander.

On Saturday the Jeffs swung north to Maine, stopping at Colby. Against the White Mules, the Jeff offense was able to muster only one goal, a backhanded flip by Alison White '04 off a feed from co-captain Gretchen Bowe '01 and Danielle Williams '03. White accumulated 10 goals on the year, second only to Williams' astounding 23.

But White's lone score midway through the second period would not be enough. For the White Mules six different players found the back of the net, starting with a tally just into the first period off of the stick of Erin Bodner.

For Amherst Alexander turned away 27 shots on the net. She has maintained a steady .879 save percentage.

For their last game the Amherst squad visited Bowdoin College. The Polar Bears outscored the Jeffs to leave the score at 7-0. The victory was Bowdoin's fifth straight, leaving them tied for third in the league with Williams.

"We were able to break down the games into smaller parts and win some minor victories," said Bowe. "Keeping Bowdoin scoreless through the first was one of these victories." For the Polar Bears, Lindsey Simon racked up a hat trick and Shelley Chessie helped out with two goals and an assist. The scoring did not start until the second period when Simon slipped the puck past Alexander.

The one-point advantage was all the Polar Bears would need that day as Bowdoin goalies Francesca Klucevek-Whalen and Emily McKissock combined to stop all 17 shots that came their way. For Amherst Alexander made 30 saves, putting her season total at 736.

The end of the third period marked the end of Bowe's career as a Jeff. Bowe, the only senior who will be lost to graduation, leaves behind an impressive Amherst career. She finished her four-year tenure with 150 points on 76 goals and 84 assists, just three points shy of the all-time record set by Genny Furst '00.

"Being on a team that loses more than it wins can take its toll on everyone, but I think this season in particular turned out on a positive note," said Bowe.
