Indoor track runs well

The Amherst men's and women's indoor track teams competed in the Open New Englands this weekend. The men contended at Boston University, while the women competed at Tufts University.

Though the men did not place at New Englands; a number of individuals put up strong performances.

For the men, Pat Hayes '03 placed fourth in his heat in the 55m high hurdles with a final time of 7.97. He missed the semifinals by two places. Nonetheless, he set a new personal record as he finished under the eight second barrier for the first time.

In the preliminaries for the mile, John Stanton-Geddes '04 took fourth in his race at 4:22.87. He also helped lead off the distance medley relay (3:14.6), which also included Tri-captain Jared Moshe '01 (50.4), Ben Kozyak '02 (1:59.1) and Mike Page '04 (4:34.1). Placing 14th out of 24, the relay team ran its fastest time of the season with 10:38.34. The men's 4x400 relay team did well also, placing 14th out of 23 teams. The team, consisting of Brian Hart '03, Janak Chandrasoma '04, Tri-captain Rob Long '01 and Moshe, had a time of 3:22.10, a season best.

"Our relay hasn't been running as well these days, but this past meet we broke our funk and ran well," said Chandrasoma. "Not only did we run well, but we see room for improvement, and we have high hopes."

Meanwhile, at Tufts, the women placed 13th overall with 18 points. The distance medley team had an outstanding performance, placing fifth with a combined time of 12:23.18. They narrowly missed the NCAA provisional mark. The team consisted of Kate Hamill '03, who ran the 800m (2:19.3), Tri-captain Amie Shei '02 , who ran the 400m (61.5), Martha Nelson '03 (5:09.4), who ran the mile, and Tri-captain Molly Burnett '02 (3:53) who ran the 1200m. Burnett also did well in the 3,000m run, placing sixth with a time of 10:18.14, her personal best.

The 4x800 relay team had a strong output, taking seventh with a final time of 9:35.79, their seasonal best. They also received All-New England distinction. Hamill was a contributor in this relay as well, with a final time of 2:21.6. Also part of the team were Nelson (2:29), Anne Perez '02 (2:23.7) and Laurel Kilgour '03 (2:21.4). Kilgour also ran in the 800m. She placed seventh in the preliminaries (2:17.36), making a new school record, but eventually came in fourth in the finals (2:21.5). This earned her All-New England honors for the second straight year.

Another of the many successful competitors on the women's side was Nelson, who ran the mile in 5:02.68 and placed seventh. She qualified for the NCAA meet, earning All-New England honors.

In the 1,000m race, Becca Woo '02 took seventh in a time of 3:03.62, running her fastest 1,000 ever. She also earned the All-New England honors. In the 5,000m race, Katie Famous '01 set her personal record, breaking the 18:30 mark with a time of 18:27.26.

"Laurel Kilgour had a great 800 qualifying race, especially since she broke the school record," said Nelson. "I also thought that Laura had breakthrough race. We had so many breakthrough races." Nelson, who qualified for the Nationals will go on to compete at the NCAAs, on March 8-9 at the Unversity of Wisconsin-Oshkosh.

The men and women's track team will join again at the ECAC Championships on March 2, at Boston University.
