Game of the Week: Softball vs. Tufts Sat., time 1:00 p.m.
By staff
The women of the softball squad will ride their now six-game win streak into Saturday, as they take on fellow NESCAC member Tufts University in a double header, with the first game to start at 1:00. The Jumbos will be only the third league foe the Jeffs have faced this season and the first since returning from their spring break stint in Fort Myers, Fla. The lack of league play has not meant a lack of wins for the squad; they now stand at an impressive 12-4 on the season. This past week, the Jeffs scored victories over Clark University, Smith College, Mount Holyoke College and WPI. Their most recent win was an 8-0 mercy rule shutout over Brandeis University on Tuesday. The game ended in the fifth inning, when Co-captain Carline Kelly '01 blasted a three-run base clearing triple. The contest was also the third career no-hitter thrown by Lauren Peloquin '02 and her seventh shutout of the year.

With the powerful pitching tandem of Peloquin and Emily Melia '03 slated to take the mound in the day and night games, respectively, the outlook is good for the Jeffs. Peloquin will bring her wafer thin ERA and 90 K's against 10-6 Tufts, and Melia will look to extend her recent hot streak and notch her third win in just three starts. They will be backed up by an offense that has gotten the timely hits of late and a defense that has proved more than adequate. Last year, when these two teams met late in the season, the game was decided in the bottom of the eighth inning when Tufts launched a two run homerun to make the score 4-2 handing Amherst only their sixth loss of the season.
