Men's tennis falls to Williams
By by Susanna Burke Staff Writer
For the Amherst men's tennis team, spring is traditionally a tough season. The action-packed spring schedule, although resulting in better all-around play at the end of the season, does take its toll in the short run. With number four David Wellner '03 and number one Bryan Wexler '02 coming back from injuries, the men's tennis team fell to national tennis powerhouse Williams College this weekend, 5-0.

Williams came out strong, with the tandem of Dan Matro and David Frankel defeating Wexler and Wellner 8-0 in third doubles. "Bryan and I had never played together, and in conjunction with our various injuries, it was difficult to get into a groove," said Wellner.

Brian Chin '03 and Adam Leibsohn '03 were taken down at number one doubles 8-2. In number two doubles, Williams twins Andrew and Daniel Murray edged out juniors Andy Tsai and Pete Ransmeier 8-5. "I was really impressed with the way that Andy and Pete played out there," said Leibsohn. "They showed a lot of heart and went down fighting."

In the singles competition, many of the matches were also close. Rob Feeley '03 took his opponent to a second set tiebreaker but eventually fell 6-4, 7-6 (5). Both Wellner and Wexler split sets with their opponents but lost in the third set. "None of us could believe that Wexler split sets with [All-American Jeff] Lefkowitz," said Leibsohn.

On Saturday, the Jeffs face Middlebury College. "It would have been nice to beat Williams, but a tad unrealistic," said Wellner. "They were third at nationals last year and didn't graduate any players, so they should fare quite well again this year."
