Crew pulls to third place at Little III Championships

Both the men and women's teams carried a first varsity and a first novice crew. In the varsity men's race, Amherst came in third with a time of 6:36.0, with Williams taking first, coming in at 6:17.9. Wesleyan University's second varsity raced Williams' first novice and Amherst's first novice, as the Jeffs came in third again at 7:21.7.

It was a pleasant day, resulting in calm waters with a slight head wind, increasing to about 10 mph by mid-morning. Last Saturday morning, the Amherst crew team raced in the Little III Championships, hosted by Williams College, in Worcester, Mass.

The women's teams had similar results. Both the varsity and first novice teams placed third, pulling times of 7:27.9 and 7:45.5, respectively.

Amherst knew this would be a tough regatta because the Williams and Wesleyan crew teams are ranked second and third in the nation. Although the Jeffs did not win any of the races, they performed well. "Considering our program is still building, I think we did really well," said Lauren Groff '01. "It was hard going into it knowing it was Williams and Wesleyan."

Amherst will race next this Saturday in the New England Fours Championships in Lowell, Mass. The Fours generally take a lot more control and skill, but the Jeffs feel prepared. "I think we'll do well, at least placing in the medals category," said Groff.
