The women's golf team completed the two-day Wellesley Inn Hartford Invitational with a strong fifth-place finish, finishing with a total of 726 points.

The solid performance put the Jeffs in a strong position entering the Massachusetts State Championships this weekend.

"I was very happy with our performance this weekend. We improved our play the second day," said Captain Jamie Ratner '02. "We made a run to improve our team standing and although we didn't, we were still pleased with our play."

The team finished in the middle of 10 high-ranked teams that competed on the Wampanoag Country Club course.

The team finished behind University of Hartford, Rutgers University, Bucknell University and Boston College.

Katie Gravel '03 led the Jeffs, firing off two consecutive scores of 84 and finishing an impressive eighth overall.

Kathryn Kuchefski '04 was the Jeffs' next highest scorer with a solid score of 186 to put her in a tie for 26th place.

Kasarin Chakkaphak '03 closely followed Kuchefski with a score of 187, which earned her a tie for 28th place.

Ratner tied for 33rd place overall with a score of 193 and Jeannie Limpert '03 followed closely behind with a 196 to put her in 36th place.

Amherst will host the Massachusetts State Championships at the Orchards course on Friday.

The meet is open to all the schools in the state with golf teams, and it will serve as an indication of how the Amherst links team compares to teams in all divisions from the state of Massachusetts.

The team will then compete at Hickory Ridge on Saturday and return to the Orchards on Sunday for the Northeastern Championships.

"We just need to relax and play well. It's a long weekend, so we need to keep up our strength and pull together. For Massachusetts States we should have a real run at it with Boston College, and we will face tough Division I competition from schools like Rutgers and Hartford," Ratner said.
