Game of the Week: Softball at Williams, Sat. 1:00
In another installment of the greatest rivalry in Division III sports, Amherst and Williams will battle again. This time the battle will be on the softball diamond, where both teams excel. So far this season the Jeffs have raced out to the lead in the NESCAC West, running up a 17-7 overall record. The Jeffs are led by Lauren Peloquin '02, a star pitcher. Peloquin has a 12-1 record with a miniscule ERA of 0.37. At the plate, the Jeffs are led by Co-captain Meg Nelson '01, who leads the team in almost all hitting categories. Nelson has a .368 batting average, 12 doubles, two home runs and 15 RBIs on the season. Co-captain Carline Kelly '01 and freshman phenom Gina Scribner have also added pop to the Amherst offense, batting .342 and .338, respectively. Against the Ephs the Jeffs expect a difficult matchup, as always. On the mound, the Ephs are led by Katherine Baldwin. Baldwin currently has a record of 8-3 with a 1.75 ERA. On offense, a trio of Ephs have stood out. Carly Massey has batted an incredible .435 in limited action, and also leads the team with a .609 slugging percentage. Jessica Hartley is second on the team with a .373 batting average and has scored a team-leading 17 runs. Giselle Pinck has also scored 17 runs on the season and is hitting a healthy .344. Williams is currently in second place behind Amherst in the NESCAC West, with an overall record of 15-8. While it is likely that both teams will qualify for the inaugural NESCAC Tournament, seeding for the tournament is crucial. The top seed from the West will face the second seed from the East-a much easier path-so this weekend series will be crucial to the Jeffs' postseason hopes.
