Rugby sweeps weekend series

Both Amherst rugby clubs pulled out victories this Saturday, with the women trampling Wesleyan 12-5 in their first win of the season, and the men trouncing their hosts, Western Connecticut State University (WCSU), 27-15.

Coming off of a couple of hard losses, the women proved themselves by barreling through Wesleyan on their home turf. Anna Savage '04 and Ana Yarawamai '04 both scored, bringing the squad to victory. Women's Club President Sheila Graham '03 praised the skill of Yarawamai, a rookie this season. "[Yarawamai] is an aspiring scrum half who not only tackles well but has a good sense of the game-she's going to be a very important member of the team," said Graham.

Due to the lack of players, the team played only one extended game instead of both A and B side games. Graham lauded the second half of the game, saying "the girls had a good, tight scrum and they showed more teamwork than we've seen most of the season."

This win was particularly important to the team in that they face Williams College this weekend. Williams is always the biggest game of the season for both the men's and women's teams. The clubs are working hard to prepare themselves for their final games, both away on Saturday.

The key to the men's victory was speed and skill against an imposing WCSU squad. The Jeffs took an early lead care of two quick tries by Mackinnon Lawrence '01. The rest of the first half was a back and forth battle that ended in a marginal 15-10 lead for the Amherst squad.

In the second half, WCSU was called on a number of flagrant penalties and late hits, ending in the ejection of a WCSU player from the match. Amherst fired back with composure, exploiting the one-man advantage on both offense and defense, extending the Jeff lead to 27-10. The WCSU team would threaten with a late try but time ran out as the point after attempt sailed wide.
