Last Saturday and Sunday, Amherst men's golf played at the District One Shootout held at the Taconic Golf Club at Williams College. They came in sixth out of a total of 13 teams, with Williams winning the shootout with a 601 overall point total.

Jeff Jude Volek '03 led the team with a two-round score of 80-78-158 over the two days. On Saturday, Steve Collins '03 shot a 77, the Jeffs' low round of the tournament. This score, plus the 85 he shot on Sunday, gave him a 162 finish to tie Captain Mike Blaisdell '02 (80-82-162) in 28th place. In other Amherst play, Mark Still '01 finished 33rd (83-80-163), and Todd Ballaban '03 took 37th place with 83-84-173.

The Jeffs' next match is the Little III Championship at Hickory Ridge Golf Course in Amherst. Although the tournament is on their home course, the Jeffs expect some tough competition. "We're definitely going to have to play well to beat Williams, who are the favorite," said Collins.

Meanwhile, the women's golf team spent the weekend at the Northeast Championships, held at Hickory Ridge and Orchards Golf Clubs. They took ninth place with a total of 719 points. Division I school Rutgers University took first in a tie-breaker against Central Connecticut State University with a final score of 654.

The women were led by freshman standout Kathryn Kuchefski, who shot a two-day score of 87-84-171 to tie for an individual 21st place. Every other member of the team finished in the top 50 individually. Katie Gravel '03 tied for 32nd place (90-89-179). Captain Jaime Ratner '02 also tied with 91-89-180 at 34th place. Jeannie Limpert '03 had a career-best 40 on the front nine Sunday and a season-best 91 with a final score of 102-91-193. Kasarin Chakkaphak '03 rounded out the scores in 49th place (98-97-195).
