Season preview: Women's soccer
By Becca Binder, Managing Sports Editor
The 2000 women's soccer team dominated its competition, coming away with an 11-5-2 record, along with Little III and ECAC Championships. Despite the loss to graduation of Alexa Faigen '01 and Meg Riley '01, the Jeffs will come out of the gates running at full strength. The core of the Jeff power will come from this year's seniors. The Class of 2002, which has made an impact on Head Coach Michelle Morgan's program since its arrival, will be expected to lead their squad to another powerful finish.

Midfielder tri-captain Cathy Poor '02 is just the third player in school history with 25 career goals and led the Jeffs in scoring during the 2000 campaign for the third straight season, finding the back of the net 11 times despite only playing in 13 games due to injury. For her efforts, Poor received both First Team All-NESCAC and First Team NSCAA All-New England Region designations. Strikers Hallison Putnam '02-last year's ECAC Tournament MVP and a tri-captain for the 2001 season-and Laura Raybould '02 chipped in with a combined seven goals and four assists. The three seniors sandwiched Jenny Rossman '04, who came out in her rookie campaign with a scorching four goals and nine assists.

All told, the Amherst offense ran through its

opposition, more than doubling the opposing scoring total on the season, 28-13. Much of the credit for the strict Amherst defense should be given to goalkeeper Brooke Diamond '03. Diamond, who surveyed the field in every game for the Jeffs last year, recorded nine shutouts en route to a 0.69 goals against average, ranking her third in the NESCAC.

The Class of 2002 has shown flashes of brilliance in the last three years. Led by Poor, Putnam, and Tri-captain Margaret Rubin '02, they will be expected to present a massive force on the field in their culminating season, which will begin at Colby College on Sept. 9 before returning home to face down Bates College on Sept. 15.
