In the first match, the Jeffs narrowly defeated the Bantams of Trinity last Saturday. The two teams split the six singles matches, with four of them going the maximum three sets.
Susanna Burke '03 led the way for the Jeffs, taking a 6-3, 4-6, 6-1 victory at second singles and teaming up with Rachel Holt '05 to take a 9-7 victory in the third doubles match. Holt also won at sixth singles, taking the Jeffs only easy win of the day, 6-2, 6-1.
Co-captain Heather Cole '02 came from behind in fourth singles to take a win. After dropping the first set 5-7, she stormed back to win the next two sets 6-3, 6-4. Cole also teamed with fellow Co-captain Stephanie Fong '02 to take an 8-5 win at first doubles.
"Heather [Cole] really won the match for us," said Fong. "She came back from 2-4 in the final set, and her win clinched the match for us."
Unfortunately, Fong did not have the same fate in singles play. Playing in the number one singles spot, Fong fell in two close sets to Diana Goldman, last year's NESCAC Rookie of the Year. Fong lost the first set 6-7 (6-8) and fell 3-6 in the second.
At third singles Wallis Molchen '04 fell to Becky Mate in the closest match of the day. Each set came down to one break of serve, as Molchen fell 5-7, 6-4, 5-7.
At fifth singles Vass Kozoulina '02 pulled out a tiebreak win in the first set, 7-6 (7-2), but fell 6-4, 6-4 in the final two sets. Kozoulina and Paige Lawrence '03 lost 7-9 in the second doubles match to round out the scoring.
"I think that the team really pulled together and focused on the task at hand," said fong. "Considering what happened during the week, it was a very tough match."
Against Skidmore the team took away another victory, but the result was much different. The Jeffs dominated all aspects of the match.
Burke set the tone early with a 6-1, 6-1 win at the first singles slot, followed by Molchen's 6-1, 7-6 win at number two. Cole continued her strong play early in the season with a 6-1, 6-1 win at third singles. At fourth singles Kozoulina scored her first points of the season, taking a 6-2, 6-1 win. In the fifth spot, Holt kept her early season momentum, winning 6-0, 6-1. At sixth singles Tristan Hedrick '05 saw her first varsity action, and did not falter, winning 6-1, 6-3 in straight sets.
In doubles, the story was the same. Cole and Fong took a dominating 8-1 victory in the first doubles slot, Lawrence and Kozoulina won 8-3 in the second, and Burke and Holt took an 8-2 win in the final mark.
Up next for the Jeffs is Little III rival Wesleyan University. Last year in two meetings the Jeffs came out on top both times, beating the Cardinals 7-2 and 9-0.
