Midfielder Pat Garvey '03 scored the first goal when fellow midfielder Carlo Valdesolo '03 broke down the right wing with the ball and passed it to the middle, where Garvey dodged the defense to knock it in. "Garvey was really good offensively," said midfielder Jeff Cantwell '04. "He took the goalie on, scoring two goals."
Then, four minutes into the second half, forward Tim Canon '04 made a long cross to the back post, where Garvey was waiting to hit an outside volley over the goalie's head into the goal.
In the 79th minute, defensive back Brad Coffey '04 intercepted a pass in midfield, dribbled past Camel midfielders, and turned it over to Valdesolo, who had a breakaway and scored. "The play [by Coffey] was completely creative," said Tri-captain Ryan Goodband '02.
Goalkeeper Bill Orum '02 needed only two saves to mark his second shutout of the season. Conn goalie Sean LaBrie had 11 saves. Conn College finished with an overall record of 2-3 and 0-3 in league play.
The Jeffs realize the need to be efficient in following through with their shots. "We have a lot of offensive talent," said Cantwell. "We just have to focus on putting the ball away."
Last Wednesday, Amherst defeated non-league opponent Babson College 3-1. Amherst scored each of its three goals during a 19-minute time span in the second half, with the lone Babson goal scored last in the second half.
The first goal came 45 minutes into the game after Canon capitalized on a pass from forward Franklin Perry '04, who holds a team-leading six points, with two goals and two assists. Perry also assisted in the second goal 14 minutes later, sending a swift pass to Valdesolo who knocked it in. In the 64th minute, Chris Kane '03 added a safety goal after receiving a crossing pass from AJ Korytoski '04. Babson fell to 5-2 with this loss.
These two wins leave the Jeffs undefeated this season, with a record of 4-0 overall and 3-0 in the NESCAC. They will play their next game against NESCAC rival Bowdoin College this Saturday. "The teams we've played so far have been pretty soft," said Coffey, "We're going to have to step it up this week."
Last night, the Jeffs fell to Tufts University by a 1-0 score. The marathon game went into double overtime before a Jumbo knocked the ball into the net in the 110th minute.
