Women's soccer looks ahead to Springfield game

Last Wednesday, the women's soccer team took a commanding three-goal first half lead and cruised to an easy 4-2 victory over Eastern Connecticut State University. Tri-captain midfielder Cathy Poor '02 opened the scoring in the fifth minute on a pass from Sarah O'Keefe '02. The Jeffs extended the lead soon after, getting goals from striker Lee-Jay Henry '05 in the 16th minute and midfielder Sara Elkins '04 in the 28th minute. The Warriors answered, though, when Erika Figueiredo scored in the 31st minute. In the 58th minute the Warriors again struck to cut the Jeff lead to one. But Tri-captain goaltender Hallison Putnam '02 withstood the pressure, and striker Tracy Montigny '05 added a late goal to help secure the victory.

Three days later, the Jeffs staged a late comeback and earned a 2-1 double overtime victory over the Connecticut College Camels. The game was scoreless until Conn College's Lena Eckhoff netted a breakaway goal in the 60th minute. Trailing for the first time all year, Amherst struggled to find the equalizer. But it finally came for them in the 86th minute when a centering pass from striker Adrienne Showler '05 bounced off of Poor and into the net. "[Showler] deserves the credit for the goal. She pressured the defense, got the ball and crossed it," said Poor.

An eventful first overtime produced no goals from either side. But in the second extra frame, Montigny followed up her own shots twice to eventually score on her third attempt. The game-winner, Montigny's third goal in as many games, came in the 110th minute. Of the late theatrics, Putnam said, "It was a big boost for the team to come from behind and put the game into overtime. But winning made it all the better," she added.

Regular goaltender Brooke Diamond '03 should be back in the net next week. Despite Brooke's illness, though, a Diamond did appear in goal on Saturday. That was Conn College's Paige, sister to the Amherst keeper, who logged 10 minutes at the start of the second half.

The Jeffs returned hosted Trinity College last night, and despite a goal by Montigny on an assist from Poor, the Jeffs dropped the contest by a 2-1 score.

Amherst will host Springfield College tomorrow and Bowdoin College on Saturday.
