Both rugby teams go scoreless over weekend

The women's rugby team extended its scoreless streak to three games in a 22-0 loss to the Smith College Pioneers Saturday, while the men endured a crushing 80-0 defeat at the hands of Army.

"We weren't putting all our effort into the game. Smith is a team we could have defeated," Catherine Itaya '04 said.

Still, the team's lack of offensive production this season has become a cause for concern. In the women's team's three losses, the cumulative score has been 49-0. While Itaya calls the scoreless streak "a fluke," she admits that "we are working on our offensive tactics."

The men's team suffered a loss to the United States Military Academy Saturday in their first regular game of the 2001 fall season.

"Let's just say the score was 'a lot' to 'a little'," said Seth Birnbaum '02. The team did to put a positive spin on the loss. "We only suffered three injuries," said club President Brian Carty '02.

"We were held scoreless, if the score is kept in points," Birnbaum mused. "But if it's kept in tears and blood ..."

This Saturday, the women will face the University of Connecticut at 11:00, and the men will travel to Harvard University.
