Fong leads Jeffs at Rolex Invite

Last week both the men's and women's tennis teams went to the Rolex Invitational Tournament, returning to Amherst with mixed results.

The women were led by Co-captain Stephanie Fong '02, who reached the finals of the singles tournament. Her key match came in the semifinals, where she beat Diana Goldman of Trinity College.

In the Jeffs' first match of the year, Fong lost to Goldman, but this time the tables were turned: Fong won 6-4, 4-6, 6-3.

Unfortunately she fell in the final to Selma Kikic of Williams College in a hard fought three-set match. Fong took the first set 7-6 (4) in a tiebreaker but dropped the next two 0-6, 2-6.

Fong also teamed with fellow Co-captain Heather Cole '02 in reaching the finals in the doubles competition, where the duo fell to Kikic and Stephanie Hall of Williams.

Rachel Holt '05 also had a strong showing, eventually falling in the semifinals to Fong, and reaching the semifinals in doubles with Susanna Burke '03 before falling to the team of Fong and Cole.

The women return to action this Thursday against UMass. Although UMass is a Division I opponent, the Jeffs have had success against them in the past.

On the men's side there were fewer bright spots.

Rob Feeley '03 had a solid showing, winning his first two matches, including an upset of the seventh seed Andrew Kolesnikov of MIT, 7-5, 6-0. Feeley fell in the third round of play, losing to Justin Ingoglia of Middlebury, 6-4, 6-1.

"It was a great match and a great win," said Bryan Wexler '02 of Feeley's performance against Kolesnikov.  "He's been picking it up with the absence of Brian [Chin '03] and Adam [Leibsohn '03]."

Wexler was the Jeffs' top seed coming into the tournament, seeded eighth overall, and he received a bye in the first round.

He won easily in his second round match but met the same fate as Feeley, losing in the third round. Wexler fell to Toby Reigeluth of Williams, 6-4, 6-4.

The Jeffs next face cross-town rival UMass.

"Overall, we did pretty well this weekend," said Wexler. "UMass will be tough, but the match is definitely winnable."
