Game of the Week: Football vs. Middlebury
By By Sports Staff
After cakewalk victories in their first two games, the Jeffs face a tough challenge when Middlebury comes to Pratt Field this weekend. Last year the Panthers handed the Jeffs their only defeat, and the two teams ended up sharing the NESCAC title. This year, the Jeffs look to be the better team out of the gate. In their first two games the Jeffs have outscored their opponents, Hamilton and Bowdoin, by a combined score of 59-0, relying on their dominant ground game and a slowly blossoming passing attack. Running backs Okey Ugwonali '02 and Kevin Kennard '03 lead the Jeffs' ground attack. Both have been injured in the last two weeks but are expected back for Saturday's game. The Jeffs are currently using a two- quarterback system, with Jeff Browne '03 and Jim Devine '04 taking snaps and Quad-captain Derrell Wright '02 as their favorite target. On defense the Jeffs are led by Quad-captains Pat McGee '02,and Dan Lalli '02, last week's NESCAC Co-Defensive Player of the Week. Middlebury has struggled so far this season, beating Bowdoin 21-7 and then losing to Colby last week by the final score of 28-21. So far the Panthers have had difficulty containing the running game, allowing 262 yards on the ground against Colby, which does not bode well for them against Amherst's high-powered running attack. Denny Smith, a wide receiver, was named the NESCAC Offensive Player of the Week after he hauled in 11 catches for a school record 228 yards in last week's loss.
