Game of the Week: Football vs. Wesleyan
By By Sports Staff
It's the most wonderful time of the year; that is, if you're a Lord Jeff football fan. It's the time of the year when 18-year old Amherst students sit next to 50-year old alumni in celebration of a big win over a Little III foe. It's the time of year when the smell of sausages and Guinness fills the air. You guessed it, Homecoming has arrived again, and this year the thirst for a win is as strong as ever. Last year's Homecoming game saw the Jeffs come back to defeat the Williams College Ephs in a thriller. With a team that has retained most of its players, this year's squad is undefeated with four wins coming into Homecoming, with a 14-3 win over Colby College this weekend. Star running back Okey Ugwonali '02 sat out most of the game with a sore ankle but was more than compensated for by the strong play of Kevin Kennard '03 and Fletcher Ladd '04 who each scored a touchdown in addition to combining for 151 rushing yards on 37 carries. This year's Homecoming opponents are the Wesleyan University Cardinals, who will surely prove to be tough competition for the Jeffs. Wesleyan is coming off a 42-16 shellacking of Bates College. The Cardinals' offense was dominant in the game with quarterback Brennan Carney completing 16 of 29 passes for 300 yards and two TDs. Wide receiver George Thompson caught eight passes for 190 yards and caught both of Carney's touchdown passes. Homecoming tickets are free, but the experience of seeing the Jeffs beat the Cardinals should be priceless.
