"When we lined up for the start," said ninth-place finisher John Stanton-Geddes '04, "Williams was on one side of me and Wesleyan was on the other. I had no choice but to run fast." Stanton-Geddes, along with the rest of the cross-country team, raced to a team second-place finish in this weekend's Little Three Championship, hosted by Wesleyan University. On the men's side, Amherst's 55 points beat Wesleyan's 64, but paled to Williams College's 15 point, first-place showing. The women posted similar results, with a second-place finish just one point behind Williams' 31-point day.

After five Williams runners crossed the line, seventh-place Jeff Matthew Katz '05 came in at 27:34. Following Stanton-Geddes, Co-captain Ben Kozyak '02 and Zeke Phillips '05 ended on an 11th place 27:43 and a 14th place 28:07, respectively. Injured Mike Page '04 came in 21st place, marking a 28:34 race.

The story of the day, however, undoubtedly revolved around the performance of Jack Morgan '05. "While everyone really worked it in the latter part of the race, and that was great to see, [Morgan] raced with guts and tenacity, not to mention speed," said Phillips. "Quite a combination for someone's first race! I think his race embodied what our team would like to represent."

On the women's end, the Jeffs were paced by Carter Hamill's '05 (18:34). Martha Nelson '03 followed Hamill's third-place day with a fifth-place, 19:05 showing of her own. Diana Rancourt '02, Becca Woo '02 and Emily Lobsenz '02 crossed the line together in seventh, eighth and ninth places, respectively. Aparna Nancherla '04, Co-captain Molly Burnett '02, Alison Dimon '03 and Helen Dole '04 followed suit to round out the top Jeff finishers in 15th, 17th, 18th and 19th places, respectively.

"We definitely didn't follow through with our pre-race strategy, but we had some really good individual performances," said Burnett.

This weekend, the Jeffs will pack their bags for the NESCAC tournament, held at Bowdoin College, before heading to the ECAC tournament at Williams on Nov. 3.
