The Amherst men's soccer team fell to Bowdoin College in a double overtime match in Middlebury, Vt., at the NESCAC quarterfinals on Sunday.

After a scoreless first half, the Jeffs jumped out to a two-goal lead in the second half of play. But they were unable to hold their advantage.

The Jeffs' first goal came early in the second half. After a Bowdoin penalty, the Jeffs had a free kick from 30 yards out. Tri-captain Casey Ryan '02 took the kick and crossed the ball to Tim Canon '04, who found the back of the net with a diving header. "Tim's goal was probably the prettiest goal we scored all year," Tri-captain Ryan Goodband '02 said.

The Jeffs' next goal came only seven minutes later. After a corner kick the ball rebounded out to Roger Boulay '03, who knocked in the second goal of the game off a long, right-footed shot.

Unfortunately, the Polar Bears refused to quit. With a burst of energy, they stepped up their play near the end of regulation.

In the 69th minute, Dave Bulow passed the ball to teammate Thomas Bresnehan, who blasted it into the top corner of the goal to put the Polar Bears on the board.

Then, after goalie Bill Orum '02 made a pair of saves, Bowdoin's Chris Fuller knocked in the equalizer. With neither team able to score a third goal in regulation, the game went into overtime.

After a scoreless first overtime period, the Bears won the game on a scramble in front of the net. After Bulow hit the goalpost with a shot, neither team was able to control the rebound. Canon made an attempt to clear the ball, but he mis-hit it, and the ball found its way into the back of the net. "It was a pretty unfortunate play," said Goodband.

In the Jeffs' regular season finale, they pulled out a tight victory over Trinity College, winning 1-0.

Tri-captain Adrian Talbott '02 scored the only goal of the game, with assists from Carlo Valdesolo '03 and A.J. Korytoski '04.

The Jeffs finished their season with a 7-6-2 record, which is fairly impressive considering the injuries they have suffered this season. Goodband, Talbott and Dave Michener '02 all missed considerable time due to injuries.

"It was a pretty frustrating season for a lot of people because of injuries," said Goodband. "But the team didn't let it get them down."
