Jeffs post decisive international win

The 15th ranked men's squash team tested their 6-5 record in an exhibition match last Saturday when the Jeffs hosted an Irish squad from Dublin City University. Although the match did not officially count for conference or national standings, the Jeffs trounced the Irishmen with an 8-1 victory.

The only loss of the day came at the hands of Dublin City's number one player, who defeated Amherst freshman and number one player Mike Strong. "He was an excellent player and I definitely got roughed up by him," Strong commented.  "However, having the [Dublin City] team stay at Amherst for the night was a lot of fun. They are a great bunch of guys,"

Co-captain Carlo Valdesolo '03 seconded Strong's comment. "I give the Dublin City team all the credit in the world for battling the way they did," he said. "But squash is a tough sport and I'm thankful that we had the strength to escape with the win."

Valdesolo, freshman phenom Gifford Sommerkamp and co-captain John Holodnak '03 all came up with definitive wins against their Irish rivals.

On Wednesday, the men's team will head to Cambridge for a tough away match against the Harvard Crimson, the defending Ivy League champion.
