Jeffs bark too much, bite too little against Bulldogs

The 13th-ranked men's squash team headed to New Haven, Conn. on Saturday to face one of collegiate squash's best teams, the Yale Bulldogs. But the trip soon turned sour as the Jeffs lost their second straight match to the third-ranked Bulldogs.

Yale gave Amherst too much to handle, shutting the Lord Jeffs out in all nine matches on the day and even defeating the Jeffs in the exhibition match.

"We weren't expecting to win the match, but we expected to take a few games off of Yale, and even a few matches, because we lost to Harvard University 8-1 and they are ranked above Yale," said Gifford Sommerkamp '05.

All Jeffs who attended the match lost on the day including Michael Strong '05, Carlo Valdesolo '03, Sommerkamp, John Holodnak '03, John Brody '02, Asad Haque '04, Brian Lawrence '05 and Andrew Merle '04. Chris Kane '03 also lost in the exhibition match.

"No one performed exceptionally well against Yale, but there were close games [from Bauer, Brody and myself]," said Sommerkamp.

The Jeffs return to action this Friday at the National Team Championships hosted by Harvard.

"National Championships are looking very promising since [Ohio Wesleyan University] dropped out of the tournament," said Sommerkamp. "We will play Bowdoin first round, who we should beat, and next round would be Penn."

The University of Pennsylvania should be a competitive match for Amherst. "We lost to them 5-4 regular season where one of the matches we lost, eight spot was 3-2 in games and our five and seven spots, who lost, have been playing much better," said Sommerkamp.

"So we have a good chance to get into the championship round of our division. A win there would put us in ninth place in the nation, third among D3 schools," said Sommerkamp.
