Women's track edges Wesleyan at Little IIIs meet

In an astounding display of teamwork, the women's track team finished second at the Little IIIs last Saturday. Williams College won the meet with 160.5 points. Amherst finished second with 120 points and Wesleyan University took third with 95.5 points. Having both rivals on their home track and not forgetting Wesleyan's narrow victory the year before, the women were determined to perform well. All week, the coaches emphasized the need for team spirit and energy if they hoped to beat Wesleyan.

"The weather was at times awful, but each of [them] layed it on the line today to produce an awesome outcome," said Assistant Coach John Adamson. With most individuals competing in multiple and sometimes new events, the victory over Wesleyan truly depended on an excellent team effort.

Lee-Jay Henry '05 shined in multiple events as she won the 100m high hurdles and triple jump, while taking second in both the 100m dash and long jump. Representative of most of the women, she also went beyond her usual call of duty by throwing the shot put and scoring points for the team.

Laurel Kilgour '03 took first in the 800m with a time of 2:22.17. Rebecca Woo '02 led a pack of Williams runners to win the 1,500m in a time of 4:52.56. Freshman standout Carter Hamill continued her dominance by winning the 5,000m in a time of 17:20.80 and tri-captain Emily Lobsenz '02 followed shortly behind her with a fourth place finish. The Amherst-laden field in the steeplechase led to Erinn White '04, Alyson Venti '04 and Alison Rodriguez '05 claiming second, third and fourth places, respectively.

Tri-captains Amie Shei '02 and Annie Perez '02 finished second and fourth, respectively, in the 200m. Shei went on to a fourth place finish in the 400m. Perez would later appear in the discus throw and score points. Kate Hamill '03 and Helen Dole '04 combined to take the sixth and seventh places in the 400m hurdles. Dole, earning valuable points for the team, also competed in every jumping event of the day, ranging from the high jump to the triple jump.

The top story of the day came from Alison Stahl '03, who, despite a nagging pain in her legs, chose to take one more jump in order to beat a Williams mark. She was not able to compete in the remainder of her events. Nonetheless, her determination was impressive.

"It was her efforts that inspired the rest of the team to perform better than I think they would have," said Lobsenz. "I am really glad that, this year, the team has been more focused on individuals working towards team goals, rather than just on personal records and qualifying times. This meet is the kind of experience that will make me miss competing on a team next year."

Next weekend the championship season begins as the women will travel to Bates College to compete in NESCACs.
