The women's novice team placed second in the finals, while the second and third varsity four took first and second in the finals. The first varsity team also came in second. "This great show of force by the women won us the women's points trophy. In addition the great finish by the men resulted in our snagging of the overall points trophy," said women's crew team co-captain Nora Sullivan '02.
The women have had a strong season, recently losing to Williams College and Wesleyan University by 19 seconds and 11 seconds, respectively, as opposed to last year's gaps of 36 and 19 seconds.
"The women's team has grown quickly both in numbers and in strength over the past four years," said women's crew team co-captain Emma Trask '02. "Each person on the team has come so far this year. To give any one person credit would be an injustice to the rest of the team."
Although the men's team lost four seniors from last year, they have made up for the loss. The men's varsity four came in fourth and beat excellent crews such as University of Rhode Island, University of Connecticut, Coast Guard Academy and Middlebury College in other sprint races. Bowdoin College remains to be beaten.
"We are closing the gap on Bowdoin and our Little III rivals, and we have an excellent crop of novice rowers, who have won several races and promise to make the varsity even stronger next year," said men's team co-captain Emmet O'Hanlon '03. "We hope to defend our New England Fours Championship and give Williams and Wesleyan a nasty surprise next year at Little IIIs."
