The weekend started off with a dominating win over Colby College, as the Jeffs cruised to their fourth shutout win of the year. The Jeffs dominated the Mules in every aspect of the match. In singles, the closest Mules player ever came to winning a set, not even a match, were in the fifth and sixth singles slots, where they took Wallis Molchen '04 and Erin Murphy '05, respectively, to a tie-breaker, but were unable to take home a set win in either match. In doubles, the Jeffs survived a scare at the first doubles slot, where the team of Rachel Holt '05 and Tristan Hedrick '05 survived a 9-7 win, but in the second and third doubles the Jeffs only lost one game while winning 16.
The next day, the Jeffs were faced with a much more difficult task: two matches in one day and more difficult competition. "It was an extremely tiring weekend. Both because of the amount of tennis and the travel time," said Holt.
The first match on Sunday brought the Jeffs their toughest battle of the weekend, Bowdoin College. Still, the Jeffs had little trouble as they rolled to a 7-2 win.
In singles, the Jeffs took five of the six matches, only losing in the fifth slot where Molchen fell in a tough three-set match. Hedrick, who only lost two games in her three matches on the weekend, led the way for the Jeffs with a 6-0, 6-0 win in the third singles slot.
In doubles play, the top team of Holt and Hedrick rebounded from their close victory the day before to shut out the top Polar Bear tandem; the Jeffs split the final two doubles slots.
In their final match of the weekend, the Jeffs faced the Bates College Bobcats, adding to their shutout total. The Bobcats proved to be the weakest foe of the weekend, only challenging for a win in the third doubles slot and getting blown out all across the singles ladder.
Although this weekend was relatively easy for the team, next weekend will bring the toughest team of the fall, Williams College. The Ephs, who took home the national title last year, and the Jeffs are two of the top programs in the country, and their battles have been epic over the last few years.
"We are extremely excited for our match against Williams," said Holt. "They are the defending national champions, but it seems that with the lineup that we have this year, and how well we have played thus far, we have a great chance of upsetting them."
This weekend marks the final match of the season for the team, as they finish the fall slate with the New England Championships, which they won in 2001.
