Amherst was led by John Stanton-Geddes '04, who finished in fifth place with a time of 27:09. Matt Katz '05 followed closely behind, finishing in 10th place in a time of 27:43. Senior Carson Taylor finished 13 seconds behind Katz and recorded a solid 14th place finish overall. Sophomores Jack Morgan and Zeke Philips rounded out the top five for the men's team placing 16th and 20th respectively. Morgan turned in a time of 27:56 and Phillips followed closely behind, recording a time of 28:11.
"We just did not get out fast enough … the front pack broke early and could not be caught," said David Schreiner '06 who finished in 21st place. Amherst's results in the past against Williams and Wesleyan suggest that they are more than capable of defeating their Little III rivals, but the Amherst men were simply unable to get going in the rain and mud last Saturday.
Although the Jeffs were not pleased with their results from last weekend, some positives can be taken from the race. Amherst was able to give valuable experience to many of the underclassman runners and size up its competition before heading into this weekend's NESCAC Championships at Tufts University. Hopefully the Jeffs will be able to end the fall season with some strong results before making a run at nationals.
