The victory maintained the Saints' undefeated 23-0-1 record on their home field, a factor that played a role in the loss for the Lord Jeffs.
"The field is wider than the ones we usually play on," said quad-captain midfielder Pat Garvey '03. "They were able to possess the ball around us."
All it took for St. Lawrence to win was sophomore midfielder Macky Diop's score 15:55 into the first half. It was Diop's first goal of the season.
Diop's goal demoralized the Jeffs and they could not muster the offense to place an answering goal in the net. The Saints outshot the Jeffs 17-to-five, but it was by no means a one-sided game.
"We had much better chances," said Garvey. "We just couldn't put it away."
Forward Tim Canon '04 had two of these chances, a header that went wide early in the first half and then another misdirected header 30:18 into the second half.
The Saints held NESCAC Rookie of the Year forward Joe Gannon to one shot, which came early in the first half and was saved by the Saint goalie. Midfielder Ben Lavely '06 and forward Jeff Cantwell '04 also had opportunities to score in the second half, but neither player managed to convert.
St. Lawrence went on to defeat Arcadia University in a quarterfinal match up before falling to eventual national champion Messiah College.
Despite the loss, Garvey remained upbeat about a successful season. "It was a great way to go out," he said. "I'm not really complaining about [making the] Sweet 16."
