This weekend the women's golf team traveled to the extremely wet par-71, 5840 yard, Agawam Hunt Golf Course in Rumford, R.I. for the Brown Spring Invitational. The women finished first among Div. III teams and fifth overall behind Div. I opponents including champion Brown University. Amherst bettered their cumulative first-day shot total of 352 by 10, firing a 342 on Sunday.

"The performance this weekend was a good rebound back from our loss to Wellesley [College] in Kiawah," said Meaghan Sullivan '05.

The course conditions, though improving, continue to make scoring difficult. "The course was extremely wet, with a lot of casual water, so it played quite long," said Coach Michelle Morgan.

Given the lack of practice time due to poor playing conditions, the team proved that a little competition and sunshine can go a long way. "Saturday was the first time in a week that we had been on a golf course," said Sullivan, "but everyone was swinging well and got their touch back over the course of the weekend."

Finishing fifth individually, Katie Gravel '03 led the way for the Jeffs, following a first-day 80 with a career competitive round low of 77. Emily Foran '05 battled back from a first round 91 to shoot 81 on Sunday to finish 20th overall. Teammate Sullivan followed in 24th place (86-92-178).

Rounding out the Amherst contingent were Sarah Godwin '05 (95-92-187, 34th), Jeannie Limpert '03 (100-92-192, 35th) and Melissa Sidman '06 (100-100-200, 39th). All three will look to make an impact at the team's next event, the Wellesley Invitational, which is set to take place this weekend. Amherst hopes to play well against a field sprinkled mostly with Div. III competition on Wellesley's home turf.

Improving weather and course conditions will only help the team. "We hope to get a lot of course work in this week with particular concentration on situations around the green since it has been difficult to work on that kind of thing inside," said Sullivan.

The team had hoped to score better against their Div. I foes, but will continue to strive for what has the potential to be an exciting season. "We are still very much in the hunt for NCAA selection so we are fast approaching our long-term team goal," said Morgan.
