The 200-yard medley relay "A" team of Liz Chiang '05, Jill Wyrick '05, Piper Pettersen '07 and Rebecca Stein '05 started Saturday's meet with a win in 1:51.89. The Jeffs' "B" relay of Natalie Dyer '07, Hilary Stockbridge '05, Margaret Ramsey '07 and Kathleen Evans '07 also swam a fantastic race, finishing in second place.
The 1000-yard freestyle was MIT's sole victory; however, Michelle McCreary '05 and Alexis Johnston '05 took second and third, respectively. In the 200-yard freestyle, Ramsey's first-place finish of 1:55.44 approached the pool record. Chiang, Dyer and McCreary swept the 100-yard backstroke. Wyrick followed, winning the 100-yard breaststroke. In the 200-yard fly, Jasmina Cheung-Lau '07 and Pettersen finished one-two, with Lisa Rubinger '07 in fourth.
Not only did Stein win the 50-yard freestyle, but her 24.42 finish broke the pool record. Stein's powerful stroke served her well as she went on to win her second event, the 100-yard freestyle. Next, Dyer won the 200-yard backstroke with a B-cut time, and McCreary took second. The 100-yard butterfly was especially satisfying for the Jeffs, as Cheung-Lau and Rubinger finished second and third following Peterson's first place.
Kristin Boyd '05 won both the one- and three-meter diving events. She is having a breakthrough season and is on the brink of qualifying for nationals.
In the 132-94 defeat of Hartwick, Cheung-Lau won the 400-yard individual medley with Katie Massopust '05 in third. Ramsey, Bea Wallace '04 and Alexis Gaines '07 swept the 50-yard freestyle. Wyrick also won the 100-yard individual medley.
Co-captain Ashley Simonsen '04 placed second in the 200-yard butterfly; Chiang did the same in backstroke. Stein won the 100-yard freestyle, with Sarah Dobbs '04 in second. McCreary, Johnston and Dyer swept the 500-yard freestyle. Stockbridge's B-cut win led Pettersen and Cheung-Lau in the 200-yard breaststroke.
"Our team is pulling together more and more as our season approaches championships," said Dyer. "Last weekend could have been much more difficult if the team was not on deck cheering for everyone during their races."
On Saturday, Amherst faces Springfield College in the final meet of the regular season. A win will complete the first undefeated season in Amherst women's swimming history before the team begins to taper for championships. "I am so excited to see what everyone is capable of at NESCACs and see how big of a team we can send to Nationals," said co-captain Jaime Fisher '04.
