Women's tennis: Jeffs tie for first NESCAC title

The women's tennis team tied for first with Williams College at the April 16-18 NESCAC Championships at Amherst, as both teams finished with 27 points. This win marked Amherst's first NESCAC title and Williams' fourth consecutive win. The Jeffs earned three individual NESCAC titles: Kristen Raverta '06 won the "A" flight championship, Katie Hudson '07 earned the "C" flight title, and Raverta paired with senior captain Wallis Molchen to win the "B" flight doubles championship.

Raverta easily defeated Wesleyan University's Tiffany Lo, 6-2, 6-3 to advance to Saturday's quarterfinals where she faced first-seeded Eph Steph Hall. In a marathon match, it was Raverta who took the ten-point tiebreaker and the match, 1-6, 6-1, 10-7. In the semifinals she defeated Colby College's Sarah Hughes, the tournament's fourth seed, again coming back from a first-set loss to win in a tiebreaker, 2-6, 6-4, 10-8. Raverta's finals match was simple by comparison as she took down Trinity College's Diana Goldman, the second seed in the tournament, in straight sets, 6-2, 6-0. Raverta was named First Team All-NESCAC singles.

Hudson's first NESCAC championship was a memorable one as she swept through the rounds of the "C" flight. She first aced Karina Bautista of Bates College 6-0, 6-0, then beat Tufts University's Kylyn Deary, 6-4, 6-4 for the second time in a week. On Saturday, the unseeded Hudson faced first-seed Julia Shaver of Bowdoin College in the quarterfinals. This match was tougher, as Hudson took the first set, dropped the second, then won the tiebreaker to move on to the semifinals. In the semis, she trounced Eph Brittany Binet 6-2, 6-2 to move on to finals. An easy 6-4, 6-4 win over Bowdoin's Sanida Kikic earned Hudson the "C" singles title and a First Team All-NESCAC singles nod.

Molchen and Raverta, seeded fourth in the tournament, teamed up in the "B" doubles flight. In the quarterfinals on Friday they aced Colby's Paige Hanzlik and Lauren Uhlmann, 8-0. On Saturday they played first seeds Amy Roche and Jena Siegel of Middlebury College in the semifinals. Raverta and Molchen proved to be the better team as they won, 8-2. They then won the title by defeating Alexandra Maclennan and Julie Mallory of archrival Williams in an 8-3 set. The pair earned First Team All-NESCAC doubles honors for their performance.

"Kristen and Katie winning singles and Kristen and myself winning doubles was huge," said Molchen. "Everyone who made a final won it and that, I think, was key. We all stepped up in the finals."

Tristan Hedrick '05 also played in the "A" singles bracket and was seeded third. She defeated Bowdoin's Alexis Bawden 3-6, 6-2, 10-3 after dropping the first set in the quarterfinals. In Saturday's semifinals Hedrick had to leave the match during the second set due to an injury. Her opponent, Trinity's Diana Goldman, went on to lose to Raverta.

"I think this weekend proved how much of a team we are. Despite some hard losses and injuries, we battled," said Molchen.

Rachel Holt '05 and Hadley Miller '06 played in the "B" singles bracket with Holt seeded first. Holt defeated Bowdoin's Kelsey Hughes 6-0, 6-2 in the quarterfinals. She was then upset by third-seed Kate Troy of Williams in a very close semifinal match. Holt took the first set 7-5, but then Troy took the second set 6-4 and the tiebreaker 12-10 to win. Holt still earned Second Team All-NESCAC honors.

Hedrick and Holt were paired in the "A" doubles flight but had to forfeit to Ephs Troy and Hall in the semifinals due to Hedrick's injury.

Miller defeated the "B" singles fourth seed, Becky Bram of Tufts, whom Holt had previously defeated in the dual match earlier in the week, in a close 7-5, 1-6, 10-4 round of 16 match. In the quarterfinals match, Miller was defeated by Middlebury's Claire Smyser.

Molchen played in the "C" singles flight and lost, 2-6, 3-6 to Lisa Miller of Tufts in the round of 16. "I personally was disappointed with my singles because I lost to the girl I beat on Tuesday from Tufts. But winning the doubles and making first team conference was great for me especially since I am a senior and it's my last NESCACs," said Molchen.

Erin Murphy '05 won her quarterfinals match in the "D" singles flight over her Wesleyan opponent, 6-1, 6-1. She was then defeated by Middlebury College's Emily Holick in the semifinals, 4-6, 3-6.

Murphy also paired with Miller in "C" doubles for a second seed. They were defeated by Trinity's Goldman and Melissa White in a close 7-9 match in the quarterfinals.

Each point was critical as the Jeffs were two points behind the Ephs in the team score going into the final day of the championships. "I think we pulled it together as a team this weekend, and even though the individual performances were good, having a cheering squad played a part in the outcomes of the important matches," said Hedrick.

"For Williams, we need to come together and try to anchor two or three of the doubles matches at the beginning so that we have an up going into the singles," said Hedrick. "The singles match-ups with Williams have always been close, so if we can tough it out in the doubles, we'll have a mental edge that may tip the scales in the singles."

Next weekend the Jeffs will host a rematch against the Ephs.

"On the way [to winning the titles] Kristen beat the number one from Williams, Katie beat her Williams opponent and Kristen and I beat the Williams team, so this gives us a ton of confidence headed into next weekend. We know what our competition is and that we can beat them," said Molchen.

Raverta was already looking ahead to next weekend. "I think the weekend was great preparation for the Williams match on Saturday," she said.
