"We finished second to Wellesley, which was disappointing, but at the same time we can't get too discouraged because the tournament was on their home course," said captain Meg Sullivan '05. "There were only four teams, but it was nice to compete against schools our size and a good change from two weekends ago where there were a lot of Div. I teams."
"It was a good weekend, but tough mentally to play the same nine holes four times. We did well, not our best, but the improvement from Saturday to Sunday was excellent," added coach Kay Cowperthwait. The team dropped 20 strokes from the first day of the tournament to the second.
Two individual Jeff golfers finished in the top five. Sullivan shot 91-84-175 to earn fourth place and Kathryn Kuchefski '04 shot 92-84-176 to place fifth.
"I guess the big problem this weekend was that no one stepped up and posted a low number for us, but the course was a tricky one to score on," said Sullivan.
First-year Sarah Harper managed to crack the top 10, placing eighth individually with scores of 89-93-182. Coming in fourth for the team was Melissa Sidman '06, who, with scores of 105-92-197, finished tied for 16th place.
Sullivan was excited about Sidman's 16th-place performance. "It was great to see Melissa have a 92 on Sunday," said Sullivan. "She was hitting the ball really well and hopefully that will give her the confidence to step up and play well next weekend."
Next weekend the women will tee off in two tournaments. On Friday, April 23, they will compete in the Massachusetts State Championships, followed by the Northeast Championships on April 24 and 25. Both tournaments will be held nearby. The Massachusetts Championships will be held at the Orchards Golf Club in South Hadley, Mass. The Northeast Championships will be held at Hickory Ridge Golf Club in Amherst, Mass. on Saturday and then will finish back at the Orchards on Sunday.
Sullivan is looking forward to the upcoming weekend's tournaments. "We are excited for next weekend. We have a good shot at finishing well in both, and I think that everyone is excited to get back to the Orchards, which is a course we are all familiar with, and it's also a really fun one to play."
