At the Dartmouth Invitational, the first tournament of the season, the Jeffs finished 13th in the field and were the top-finishing Div. III team in a competitive field of Div. I schools. Co-captain Meg Sullivan '05 was the team's low scorer with a 79-87-166. Sullivan led the team throughout the season on and off the course.
The Jeffs' second tournament was not as successful. At the Mt. Holyoke Invitational, the women finished in sixth place, tied with host and perennial rival team Mt. Holyoke College.
Adding insult to injury at the following tournament, the Wellesley Invitational, the Jeffs finished third, a full five strokes behind the Lyons. Foran reasserted her presence in this third tournament of the season, shooting under 80 on the second day of competition, and generating the team's season-low score of 351-346-697.
Once again the women were forced to concede to the Mt. Holyoke team at their final tournament of the season, the Central Connecticut State University Invitational. Though Amherst scored only one shot more than they did at the previous tournament, the Jeffs only managed a seventh place finish. At the same time, the Mt. Holyoke team improved by 18 strokes to finish in first place. Sarah Harper '07 was the team's low scorer, shooting 86-82-168 and tying for 11th place overall. Sullivan and Foran were the second and third scorers for Amherst, respectively.
"Emily Foran [had a] comeback from a year away from golf and finish[ed] the season with two strong tournaments," said Plumer. "Sarah Harper [fought] through a mid-season slump to have her best finish in the last tournament of the year."
In addition to Sullivan, Foran and Harper, a number of other players made significant contributions. Senior co-captain Sarah Godwin assisted in the team's leadership and contributed to the team's scores, while first-year Ali Berman usually rounded out the women. "Ali Berman [scored] in three of her first four tournaments as a college golfer," said Plumer, who was impressed by Berman's rookie season.
The team is looking forward to rematches with Mt. Holyoke in the spring. Team cohesiveness and optimistic attitudes will be relied upon in addition to an intense spring break training trip to Arizona. "I like our chances to do well this spring-we have the depth to be a very good team if we can all play well at the same time," said Plumer. "I know that everyone is positive looking towards the spring and our trip to Arizona will kick it off."
