Men's Track
The men's lone individual victory on Saturday came from John Babbott '07 in the 1000-meter run where he edged out a Trinity runner with a time of 2:36.51.
Jon Ettinger '07, Sam Hayman '07, Rom Cabeza '08 and co-captain Jack Morgan '05 produced a strong runner-up finish in the 4x400-meter relay. The relay members also did well individually: Hayman and Cabeza finished third and fourth, respectively in the 600-meter run earlier in the day, and in an intense finish, Morgan battled to take third place in the 800-meter run.
Despite competing on a sore leg, Matt Katz '05 managed an impressive third place in the 3000-meter run, followed by Mike Harbus '08 and Nate Freese '07, who came in seventh and ninth, respectively. In the 5000-meter run, Evan Guiney '06 had a strong fifth-place finish.
Meanwhile, Tomas Morrissey '08 grabbed fourth in the 1500-meter run before returning to the track to win the second heat of the 800-meter, placing 10th overall. Richard Wilson '07 took ninth overall in the 1500-meter run, decisively winning his heat in his first race of the year.
"We're looking really good as a team at this point," said Babbott. "Things seem to be poised for a really exciting championship season, and hopefully for a run at nationals for the men's distance medley relay."
Women's Track
While the rest of the team prepared for the Wesleyan Invitational the next day, Garrahan and Hamill travelled to Boston University on Friday for the Terrier Classic, a meet open to runners from all over the country.
While Garrahan's 3000-meter race started slower than expected, she still won her heat and came in 11th overall. Various runners kept sprinting to the front to lead the pack throughout the race until Garrahan finally secured the lead and achieved a new personal record of 9:46.70. Similarly, the pace of the 5000-meter run was not as vigorous as Hamill expected. Nevertheless, she grabbed fourth place in 16:43.95, just short of beating her College record.
At the Wesleyan Invitational the next day, the women's team captured four individual wins. Ginger Polich '06 led the team at the meet, placing first in the 1000- and 1500-meter runs before being joined by co-captain Lee-Jay Henry '05, Hannah Campbell '07 and Lyndsey Scott '06 in a 4x400-meter relay victory. Polich bested a pack of Trinity runners by more than six seconds in the 1000-meter run, followed by Katie Moravec '08, who came in fifth. Polich's win was just as definitive in the 1500-meter run, while Moravec had another solid race to take ninth.
Heather Wilson '08 posted her first collegiate win in the 3000-meter run in 10:36.94. Following Wilson, Laura Mortimer '08 and Ali Rodriguez '05 placed third and fourth, respectively.
Scott came agonizingly close to a victory in the 400-meter run, but was narrowly edged out by a New Jersey City University runner. Later, Scott put in a solid performance in the high jump to take fifth in the event. Strong performances also came from Henry in both the long jump, where she placed third, and the 55-meter hurdles, where she just missed the College record with her fifth-place effort. Campbell raced hard in the 200 to earn sixth place and just missed the finals in the 55-meter dash, crossing the finish line in ninth place.
The men and women will hit the track again this Saturday at the Tufts Invitational.
