The rookie defender hit the ice with his skates blazing at the Spurrier Classic last weekend. Burns tallied his first three collegiate points in Saturday's opening-round contest against Connecticut College. When the Jeffs fell behind in the first period, Burns scored an unassisted goal to knot the score, and his additional goal and assist greatly contributed to Amherst's 7-4 victory over the Camels. In the championship game the next day, Burns fired home the game-winner in overtime as the Jeffs beat the hosts from Wesleyan University. Burns earned NESCAC Player of the Week honors for his stellar performance.

In the first two meets of the season, the first-year swimmer has already made quite a splash. Amherst was dominant in the freestyle events and Stern was a huge part of the Jeffs' success. In the opening event against Colby College, Stern anchored the winning 200-yard medley relay and proceeded to dominate in the 200- and 100-yard freestyle events. Just two days later at Wesleyan University, Stern demonstrated her versatility within her stroke, claiming wins in the 50- and 500-yard freestyle races. She also was a member of the winning 400-yard freestyle relay.
