The most recent item Olson checked off is perhaps the most impressive of all. Last Friday, Olson was named one of 17 finalists for the prestigous Bob Cousy award. The award is given annually to the nation's best collegiate point guard; in some ways, Olson's name appears to be out of place. He is one of only two Div. III point guards nominated; 13 of the 17 finalists play for a Div. I team.
In terms of his play, however, he fits right in. In the three years that he has led the Jeffs, the team has an overall record of 75-6. Olson has propelled the Jeffs to appearances in the Div. III Sweet Sixteen in each of his three seasons, as well as to spots in the NCAA Quarterfinals and FInal Four twice.
He is currently second on Amherst's all-time assist list, having amassed 454 assists over his three-year career. Last season, he set a single-season record with 179 assists; currently standing at 162 through 23 games, he is on place to exceed that mark this season.
The crew of finalists is unusually strong this season, so much so that an extra finalist was named to the list. Past winners of the award include Jameer Nelson (2004), Raymond Felton (2005) and Dee Brown (2006). All three were selected in the NBA draft, with Nelson and Felton in the first round.
"Although it is an individual award I would not have been nominated without the help of my teammates and the overall success of the team," said Olson."It is always helpful to be on a winning team, especially one that has had the success we have had for about five years now."
