After a 13-4 victory over Middlebury B, Army took the field to play the Panthers' third-seeded A team. Despite a slow start, Army rebounded from a 10-7 deficit to win the game 14-12. The tired squad then fell to Williams 13-11 in the next match, but ended the first day on a high note by defeating UMass B 13-3.
The 3-1 record, combined with a 13-0 victory over Williams B the next morning, put Army at second place in its pool and set up a rematch of last year's semifinal against regional top seed and perennial powerhouse UMass-Amherst A. A trip to the finals was on the line. Down 8-3 at the half and 12-8 shortly thereafter, Army rallied to score six straight points en route to a 15-13 upset. "The win against Middlebury was important, but upsetting number one seed UMass was the biggest victory of the weekend," said senior Alex Bridges of the game. Unfortunately, Army's run ended in the next game with a 15-11 loss to Williams.
Despite the loss, Army's second-place performance clinched one of three sectional bids to the regional tournament to be held this weekend at Dartmouth College, and a chance to improve on its seventh-place finish last season.
