After scoring the game-winning goal in the Jeffs' 3-2 overtime win against Trinity College on Saturday, defender Catherine Calvert '09 is off to a strong start.
Arguably the best player on the field for much of the contest, she contributed defensively as well, including a number of big hits out of the backfield. With the help of her teammates, Calvert put constant pressure on Trinity's fowards, effectively slowing down the Bantams' attack and limiting them to six shots on goal-three fewer than Amherst. Even in 127-degree weather on the new Gooding Field, the Jeffs kept fighting and, thanks to Calvert, started the season 1-0.
Ryan O'Donnell '08
Much of the Jeffs' success will hinge on the performance of tri-captain midfielder Ryan O'Donnell '08. Thus far he has shown his skill on the field this season.
In the Jeffs' opener against Trinity College, O'Donnell prevented an important goal by the Bantams that kept the score knotted at 0-0. In overtime, O'Donnell kicked the ball from 35 yards to forward Jake Duker '08, who then scored the winning goal for the Jeffs. Against the Warriors of Eastern Connecticut State University, O'Donnell showed his tricks again by scoring the opening goal and leading the Jeffs to a 2-1 victory.
