This weekend the men's tennis team displayed its skill in two locations. One half of the squad went to a dual match in Newport, R.I., where they faced Salve Regina University, while the other half went to Hanover, N.H., to compete in the Dartmouth Invitational Tournament.
At Salve Regina, the Jeffs took their first win of the year quite handily with a score of 7-2. All of the doubles teams won their matches in impressive fashion, with first-year Sean Doerfler and sophomore Alex Kaufman dominating the first doubles spot and taking the match by a score of 8-4. Senior co-captain Mike Mintz and sophomore Scott London were victorious in the second doubles position, beating Salve Regina 8-2.
To complete the doubles sweep, senior co-captain Jeff Wan and sophomore Dan Gonzalez defeated their opponents 8-2 as well. "The one thing that I thought was really important about the Salve match was that we won all of the doubles matches pretty convincingly," said Mintz. "I think our focusing on doubles during practice is starting to pay off. Last year doubles was a weakness for us, and in order to take a step forward this year it is going to have to become a strength."
In singles play, the Jeffs dominated the Seahawks with four impressive wins from Mintz, Wan, London and Gonzalez. Doerfler and Kaufman gave their opponents tough competition, with both matches including a tiebreaker.
After the match was over it was very clear that not only were the upperclassmen a factor in the victory but another key ingredient was the younger players on the team.
"Our underclassmen were key to our win. Kaufman and Doerfler pulled off quite an upset at one doubles and they both almost pulled off wins at fourth and first singles, respectively," stated Wan. "I had a great time playing doubles with Gonzalez, who was able to strike a lot of returns and set up a lot of easy volleys with them and his serve. Overall, I was very happy with how our underclassmen and I stepped up that day. Mike played sorta well too I guess."
At Dartmouth, the other half of the men's team had their hands full against some intense Div. I schools and archrival Willams College.
Competing for the Jeffs were senior Geoff Schwartz in the A Flight, first-year Moritz Koenig in the B flight, sophmore Tristan Biesecker in the C flight, sophomore Dan Kim in the D flight, first-year Alex Gumport in the E flight, junior Peter Stein in the F flight, first-year Max Gumport in the G flight and finally, sophomore Ben Krause in the H Flight. Biesecker did the best for the Jeffs, making it to the finals and falling to Dartmouth's Curtis Roby.
The Jeffs are coming off of a strong weekend as they head to Williamstown, Mass., this weekend to participate in the three-day Intercollegiate Tennis Association Tournament hosted by Williams College.
