By Mary Doris Reggie, Sports Editor
• Zach Lerner '09

Zack Lerner advanced to the semifinals in singles play last weekend at the ITA New England Championship Tournament. Lerner had advanced through the first round on a bye, and he won the next three rounds in straight sets. He defeated Middlebury College's top seed and Williams College's second before falling to the eventual tournament champion.

This is Lerner's first showing of the fall season as he has been suffering from a wrist injury. Keep an eye out for Lerner who is sure to be a force on the court this year. Although the fall season is coming to a close, Lerner will continue to help the Jeffs as they vie for team titles in the spring season.

• Eric NeSmith '09

Junior running back Eric NeSmith led the Jeff offense in Amherst's slaughter of Bowdoin College. In the opening drive, NeSmith ran the ball 41 yards on nine carries to place Amherst nine yards from the end zone.

Amhest continued to rely on NeSmith, who earned a total of 131 rushing yards and two touchdowns on Saturday. NeSmith currently leads the Jeff offense, averaging 108 yards per game and 5.4 yards per carry. The Jeffs will look to NeSmith again this weekend as they take on the strong defense of Middlebury College.
