Rox Improbable Run at 22-1

NFL Report

Another week in the NFL has come and gone, leaving us with a number of very clear facts about both the NFC and the AFC. We now know that 43-year-old journeyman Vinny Testaverde can be considered a feasible injury plug-in, that the Rams and Dolphins are laughable and the Patriots are just too good for the NFL.

In a highly anticipated possible Super Bowl preview, the Pats visited the consensus best team in the NFC, Dallas. After a mandate by Cowboys WR Terrell Owens to "Getcha Popcorn Ready," the Patriots bludgeoned the 'boys by 21 points. Is there a better QB in the universe right now than Tom Brady? The guy has tossed 21 touchdown passes while throwing only two interceptions, both of which occurred on tipped balls. There is no better starting receiving corps in the NFL than Moss and Stallworth. The X-factor for this team, however, has been WR Wes Welker. Aside from being far and away the best third wideout in the game, he is slippery, tough as nails and a team player.

This will be the first time I have changed my mind on this debate, but if I had to take any one quarterback in the league right now, it would be Brady over Manning. He has done amazing things with no weapons in the past, and now he has the full artillery. If the Colts were to play the Patriots this weekend, I think the Pats might beat them worse than they beat the Cowboys. I am about three weeks away from really believing that this team will make the 19-0 run. Keep in mind this is coming from a New Yorker.

Now, around the NFL. I am also very excited about Minnesota RB Adrian Peterson. He is the best halfback that has come out of the draft in a long time, and he proved it Sunday while rushing for 224 yards and three touchdowns. Are the Vikings a great team now? No. But they may have the second coming of Marshall Faulk if they take care of Peterson the right way. More exciting than Peterson on Sunday, however, was the play of Bears' WR/KR Devin Hester. He toyed with the Minnesota special teams on an unbelievable 89-yard punt return touchdown, and then did it on the offensive side of the ball as well by scoring another long touchdown thrown by Brian Griese. Hester simply ran past the defense. I think even I am a better Bears wideout without Rex Grossman under center.

The New Orleans Saints were able to pick up their first win against a struggling Seattle team, while the Rams and the Miami Dolphins should think about moving to the Arena League. St. Louis is just awful, as it scored a measly three points en route to its sixth loss of the young season, while Miami allowed 41 points to Derek Anderson and the Cleveland Browns.

MLB Playoff Analysis

As hard as it is for me to write this, the Yankees did not deserve to win their series with the Indians. They were outpitched, outhit and outclassed. Many Yankee fans blame the hoard of pestilence that attacked Joba Chamberlain during the late innings of game two; many others blame Joe Torre; even more blame Alex Rodriguez. The facts are as follows: When the playoff king and captain Derek Jeter only remembered how to ground into double plays, and the decision was made to start Chien-Ming Wang in Game 4, the Yankees were doomed. I hope that sufficient changes are made this offseason to get some solid starting pitching and more young talent to replace overpaid, aging players.

Now, onto the teams that are still in contention to play in the fall classic. The Boston Red Sox were looking like the best team, but now down 3-1, it looks like their season could be coming to an end. They find themselves in a big hole similar to 2004. Will they be able to repeat their magic? I doubt it.

Cleveland will have a chance to close out the series at home. Even if Josh Beckett does outduel C.C. Sabathia, the Tribe will have two chances to win one game in Boston to earn a trip to the World Series.

Terry Francona was crazy for even having Eric Gagne in the bullpen, as he has been the cause for numerous Red Sox losses this year, most recently in Game 2 of the ALCS. Although right now it doesn't really matter who is pitching because Cleveland's bats have gotten hot at the right time.

I am going with Cleveland to stick it to the Sox and finish the series off next week in six games.

The Colorado Rockies swept their series with the Diamondbacks. Their amazing streak has grown to 21 wins in their past 22 games, which is miraculous if nothing else. With a core of young players led by MVP candidate Matt Holliday and stunning rookie shortstop Troy Tulowitzki, the Rockies seem to be on a mission to finish this strikingly improbable run. I am picking them to take the World Series in six games against the Indians. I think that what the Rockies have been able to accomplish already has shown they can hit tough pitching and grind out runs in the late innings of important games. The thin Colorado air won't hurt either. There will be celebrations in Denver this fall.
