It was a great weekend to play golf, with no rain in the forecast. "The course was in great shape and the weather was surprisingly warm," said junior Glenn Wong.
The top finisher for the Jeffs was first-year Trip Wray, who finished tied for 39th out of the 211 participants. After shooting an 80 the opening day, Wray came back strong with an impressive 76 for a +12 overall score. The next best finisher for the Jeffs was senior captain Jesse Corradi. Following Wray's tend, Corradi came back with a much stronger second round than his first. After his round-two score of 79, Corradi finished with a +21 score, tied for 110th overall.
Right behind Corradi was junior Chris Valentine, who totalled 168 and finished 136th overall. After a first round score of 85, he improved in the second round by two points. Valentine struck the ball particularly well on the second day, but was affected by the wind and had difficulty putting.
"I hit the ball great this weekend, my short-game was the best it's been, but I putted poorly," said Valentine. "The wind was exceptionally difficult and could move even well-struck shots 10-15 yards. I didn't make a single birdie, missing multiple attempts from every length. I had no three-putts the first day, but two-putted everything, and had maybe six or seven three-putts on the third day."
Junior Will Collins finished five spots behind his teammate, with a 169 total. Collins had a much better second round as well, shooting an 82 after a first round of 87.
The final participant for the Jeffs was junior Glenn Wong, who finished 171st in the tournament with a score of 175.
The theme for the Jeffs last weekend was improvement in the second day, which was encouraging, though somewhat surprising based on the conditions.
"It was extremely windy on the second day, but we managed to adjust as every player scored better on the second day," said Wong. "Personally I didn't have my best stuff. I was inconsistent on the greens and had difficulties shaping it."
The overall winner of the tournament was the University of Rhode Island with a total score of 600 (+24), eight strokes better than the second-placed University of Connecticut. Salem State College won the Div. III title with a team score of 619.
