The women’s swimming and diving team is charging ahead with considerable momentum, as the ladies comfortably maintain their perfect record of 6-0. They are the team to watch this season at the upcoming NESCAC Championships.

The men’s team, on the other hand, is recovering from a disappointing loss (144-97) to Williams College on Jan. 12. However, their record improved to 5-1 this past Saturday with a wide-margin victory against Union College.

Women

The Jeffs are definitely the big fish in the water. At Hamilton College on Jan. 5, the women placed first in 13 out of the total 16 events of the day. Senior captain Brittany Sasser proved her leadership ability again with winning times for the 100-yard butterfly and the 100-yard backstroke. Kendra Stern ’11 continued to power through her rookie season and won two events. In diving, Meggie Meissinger ’11 earned first place standing and Sabrina Dorman ’09 placed second in the three-meter event.

The Ephs proved to be a challenge, but the Jeffs managed to slide by with their narrowest victory yet (152.5-147.5). Amherst had an easy win over Union this past weekend. Brooke Bennett ’11 also had a breakthrough rookie performance by winning the 200-yard butterfly.

Men

The men’s team also matched the women’s 13 victories in defeating Hamilton. Christian Witzke ’09 kept his undefeated status and took home first place in the 100- and 1000-yard freestyles. Ryan Colby ’11, furthermore, won the 200- and 500-yard freestyle events. Senior captain Derek Prill placed first in the 50- and 100-yard breaststroke and Mike Waskom ’09 picked up the 50- and 100-yard backstroke. In diving, Kai Robinson ’09 marked his recent transfer from Brown by winning both the one- and three-meter events.

The Jeffs had to admit defeat, however, against the long-standing NESCAC champion, Williams. Witzke ’09 had one of the few wins of the day in the 200-yard freestyle, and Robinson ’09 continued his winning streak. Their sound victory against Union was a quick recovery and showed that they are still a team to contend with.
