The Jeffs made an impressive start in their first few meets of the winter season. At Brandeis University on Saturday Jan. 19, the men finished at seventh place while the women placed third.

A talented group also competed in Boston University’s Terrier Invitational this past Friday. Amherst showcased a number of first place finishes on Saturday at the Wesleyan Invitational as well. Junior Carly Levenson and sophomore Jimmy Swanson stood out as valuable performers of the week.

Women

Senior co-captain Heather Wilson and junior Elise Tropiano both competed in the 5,000-meter run for the Terrier Invitational. Wilson finished in fifth place with a time of 17:17.04 and Tropiano earned ninth place just 16 seconds behind.

The Jeffs, in addition, tallied triple first-place finishes at the Wesleyan Invitational. The A group clinched the number one spot in the distance medley relay in under 13 minutes, and Liz Dalton ’09 took first in the 3,000-meter run. Sophomore Catherine Knuff finished less than a second behind Dalton’s time to pick up second place. Zandra Walton ’09 and Levenson also placed second in the 800-meter run and the 500-meter run, respectively. Overall, the women’s strong performances helped them earn a third place team finish.

Men

The men had less than a stellar meet at the Wesleyan Invitational, but still had a number of high-ranking finishes. Jimmy Swanson ’10 took home the men’s only win for the meet, with a time of 2:37.07 in the 1,000-meter run. Swanson took the lead after the first lap of the race and kept his momentum going to finish with a victory.

Veterans rallied to lead the Jeffs to a seventh place team finish for the meet. Senior co-captain Peter Foote was a runner-up in the 3,000-meter, pushing himself to sprint the last leg of the race to pass another runner. Basile Beaty ’08 finished third in the 3,000-meter run and helped the Jeffs to another third place finish in the distance medley relay. Yet another senior, Mike Harbus, also took fourth in the mile.
